Best school shoes for boys: closure and growing room

By PickWise India EditorialLast reviewed November 20267 min read4 products compared

Short answer

NHS Wales advises fastening school shoes securely, preferably with laces or Velcro, leaving a pinkie's width at the toes, and rechecking fit every 2 to 4 months. Of four pairs from Puma, Skechers and Campus, two use Velcro, one laces, and one has no closure listed.

The best school shoes for boys in the primary classes depend on the closure and on the growing room left in the shoe, and four pairs from Puma, Skechers and Campus show the choices. The parent in mind is buying the annual pair of black shoes for a boy in roughly Class 3 to 6, at a school that mandates black.

Guidance on fit comes from NHS Wales, which publishes children’s footwear advice through its Move Better Gwent service. That advice is written for children in general, in Wales, and says nothing about Indian schools or heat. Brand pages supply the product details.

Orderability in November 2026 was not shown, and the Puma page lists only some youth sizes.

Velcro, laces or a stitched shoe

NHS Wales says footwear should be fastened securely, preferably with laces or Velcro straps. It advises against slip ons that have no secure fastening.

Two of the four pairs use Velcro. Puma gives the Smash Comfort hook and loop straps, and Campus lists the CUBS KIDS V with a Velcro strap closure. Straps involve no knot, which leaves fewer steps for a child fastening them alone in the morning.

Skechers makes the GO RUN 600 Bexor as a lace up. It suits a parent whose son ties his own laces, and it keeps the closure in the group that NHS Wales names.

Campus describes the BINGO 151R mainly through its sole, which has stitch down construction. Its closure is not stated on the listing, so it cannot be placed in either group.

NHS Wales puts laces and Velcro on equal footing, and the page names no preference between the two. The choice between them therefore rests on what the child can manage and what the school allows.

Puma India adds a brand claim about Velcro. It says straps let the fit adjust as the foot grows, and that is a statement from the seller and not a measured result.

Growing room and size checks

NHS Wales gives two instructions on fit. For young children it allows a pinkie’s width at the end of the toes, and for children moving into adult footwear it allows an index finger’s width.

The same page asks for a check of the width and depth at the ball of the foot and across the toes. The fit should be snug and secure without excessive tightness.

A recheck every 2 to 4 months is the schedule it gives. For a boy whose feet may outgrow the shoes within a school year, that means more than one size check between the first day and the last.

The decision for a parent is therefore larger than choosing a model. It includes how much room to buy at the start and whether to plan a mid year check, and the NHS Wales page does not give an age to size table to help with either.

No page read here maps a kid size to an age, so none of the sizes below carries an age claim.

Colour and the school rulebook

Puma India says black shoes are good for school as they are easy to clean and look neat. Black is the requirement for the parent in mind, and the brand copy is a claim and not a finding.

One pick does not meet an all black rule. The Puma Smash Comfort is listed in Puma White and Puma Black. Puma’s school shoe category copy mentions black and white colours, so the finish varies within the brand.

Puma also sells the Smash Telestom, a school sneaker with two Velcro straps and a synthetic leather upper. Its colours are white, cream and red, so it does not meet a black rule and is left off this list.

The Skechers page does not state the colour in words, and the style code ends BBK. The Campus pairs are both listed as black.

Notes on each pair

Puma builds the Smash Comfort with a textile upper, hook and loop straps, an EVA outsole and a SoftFoam+ sockliner. It is a low boot with a flat heel and a 0 mm heel to toe drop, and the page lists neutral pronation. It suits a parent who wants a Velcro school shoe a child can fasten alone and whose school allows a white and black finish.

Youth sizes 6, 7, 9 and 10 are listed, and no size 8 appears. Fit is regular, and the page gives no age range or care instructions.

Skechers describes the GO RUN 600 Bexor as a lace up with a synthetic upper and breathable mesh panels. It has a nonmarking outsole and a cushioned midsole, and the brand calls it uniform style and suitable for school. It suits a parent who wants a light lace up that the brand says can go in the washing machine, and it weighs 6 oz in boys size 2.

The care line says to wash on a gentle cycle in cold water and air dry. The page lists a heel of 2.54 cm, shows the pair under toddlers although it is described for school, and leaves the India and UK size field blank.

Campus lists the CUBS KIDS V in black with a Velcro strap closure and an anti skid outsole. It suits a parent who wants an all black Velcro shoe from a school shoe specialist brand. Only the collection listing was read, so materials, sizes and weight are not stated.

The Campus BINGO 151R is black, with listing text that mentions a solid rubber sole and stitch down construction. It suits a parent who wants a stitched rubber sole for rough playground wear. Closure, upper material, sizes and weight are not stated.

Another lace up from Campus, the CUBS CH, appears on the same listing with an anti skid outsole. A Velcro model with a PVC sole is named there too, so the brand has other options.

Planning the year

A school year gives the pair four jobs in order. It has to be bought with room to grow, worn in gradually, rechecked at intervals, and replaced when the check says the toes have run out of space.

The first job is the size at purchase. NHS Wales gives the pinkie’s width as the allowance for young children, and the same page gives an index finger’s width for children moving into adult footwear.

Wear in is next. The page asks for blocks of 30 to 60 minutes at first, which fits the first week of a school term better than an all day start.

Rechecks follow, and the interval is 2 to 4 months. The same page asks for width and depth at the ball of the foot to be checked, and not only the room at the toes, whenever a recheck is made. Replacement is the last step, and it depends on what the recheck shows about the space left in front of the toes.

Brand copy on school shoes

Puma India describes its boys school shoe category with Velcro straps, mesh on selected styles, a cushioned collar, and black and white colours. That is category copy, and the listing itself showed no products when it was read, so none of it is attributed to a single pair.

The kids black shoes page from Puma carries the claims about easy cleaning and adjustable fit already mentioned. Both statements are brand copy from a seller of school shoes, and neither is backed by a test result on the page.

Campus offers a kids school shoe collection, and its listing text mentions Velcro straps, anti skid outsoles and stitch down construction. Those words describe features and give no measurement or test result.

Wear in and soles

NHS Wales suggests building up wear time gradually in blocks of 30 to 60 minutes. During that time it lists rubbing, blistering and redness as the signs to watch for.

It also advises against very thin soles, which could let something sharp poke through. Sole thickness is missing from all four listings, so the advice cannot be checked against these listings.

Outsoles are described by material and not by thickness. Puma names EVA, Skechers names a nonmarking outsole, and Campus names anti skid and rubber. These are descriptions from the brands.

Details the pages leave out

Two of the four entries rest on listing text alone, which is a thinner base than a product page with sizes, materials and care lines. The Campus product pages did not load, so the CUBS KIDS V and BINGO 151R details are limited to what the collection page prints.

Weight appears for the Skechers only. No Indian size conversions are given by any brand page, and the Skechers page shows no India or UK size at all.

Sole flexibility is not covered by the NHS Wales page, so no pair can be judged on how much it bends. The Skechers page calls its midsole responsive and cushioned, and that wording is the nearest any page comes to the subject. Cleaning advice appears for the Skechers alone, and care lines are not stated for the other three entries.

Frequently asked questions

How much room should a child's school shoe have?

NHS Wales advises leaving a pinkie's width of space beyond the toes for younger children. The fit should be snug and secure without being excessively tight.

How often should I check my child's shoe size?

A recheck every few months is the guidance from NHS Wales, which covers children's footwear generally. It is not written for Indian schools or for hot weather.

Velcro or lace up school shoes?

Laces or Velcro straps are both preferred by NHS Wales, as long as the shoe fastens securely. Slip ons with no fastening are the type it advises against.

How do I break in new school shoes?

Short blocks of wear that build up gradually are the method on the NHS Wales page. Rubbing, blistering or redness are the signs it lists for a parent to look for.

Are black shoes the best choice for school?

Puma India says black shoes are easy to clean and look neat, which is a brand claim. Each school sets its own rule on colour, and the rulebook decides.
