Best yoga mat for beginners in India: TPE, PVC or rubber

By PickWise India EditorialLast reviewed November 20265 min read5 products compared

Short answer

Material and thickness decide a first yoga mat. Decathlon's blog calls 6 mm more practical than 4 mm, and warns people with a latex allergy off natural rubber. Five mats in TPE, PVC, natural rubber and NBR foam are compared from their listings.

Material comes before brand

A beginner practising from a video on a tile or marble floor will meet four materials on Indian listings, and the label “yoga mat” covers all of them. Decathlon India’s blog says PVC, also called vinyl, is the most common, and that it does not decompose in landfills and is hard to recycle.

TPE is described by the same blog as less reactive and polluting than PVC. Natural rubber is the third type, and the blog says anyone with a latex allergy should stay away from it. EVA mats are moisture resistant and easy to clean, and the thinner versions may stretch a little.

The fourth group is foam. Nivia’s Flow mat is a high density NBR based rubber foam, which does not fit neatly into TPE, PVC or natural rubber.

Reading the listing for the actual material matters, since one brand can use more than one. Boldfit’s own page says its mat is TPE or EVA depending on the variant, and the PVC free claim applies only to the TPE versions.

Thickness on a hard floor

Decathlon’s blog says a 6 mm mat is far more practical than a 4 mm mat, and that a mat which is too thin can cause knee strain in a crescent lunge. Tile and marble give no cushioning of their own, so the mat is the only layer between the knee and the floor.

The same blog warns in the other direction. A thick mat can make it hard to keep a solid connection to the floor, which matters for standing balances.

As a retailer’s advice and not an independent test, the blog has limits, and no standards or medical source on mat thickness was read for this guide. The advice is useful mainly as a way to split the options into thin, middle and thick groups.

On that basis the Decathlon rubber mat is the thin option. The Boldfit, Cult and Kobo mats form the middle group, and the Nivia sits alone at the thick end.

Pose style and floor type

A practice built around standing poses and balances, such as warrior sequences and tree pose, depends on a firm connection to the floor. That points a beginner toward the thin or middle groups, going by the blog’s reasoning.

Kneeling, lunges and floor work depend on cushioning for the knees and wrists. The Nivia listing describes exactly that use, with yoga, Pilates, warm ups and mobility work named on the page.

Grip is the quality that the Decathlon listing associates with natural rubber, and the same listing mentions comfort. The brand says all natural materials give better grip and comfort, which is a brand statement and not a measured result.

Two TPE mats

Boldfit sells the Pro Grip Luxury TPE Yoga Mat with Carrying Bag. It measures 183 x 61 cm and is 6 mm thick, and the page describes a non slip texture and a water and sweat resistant surface.

Weight and warranty are both absent from that page. Its FAQ says some Boldfit variants use EVA instead of TPE, so the listing title is worth matching to the product received.

Cult sells a TPE Yoga Mat in brown, measuring 182 x 61 cm. The brand states that it is TPE and latex free, and the listing includes an anti skid base and a carry strap.

No weight or care instructions are given on the Cult page. A buyer who wants a latex free mat with a strap is the reader this listing speaks to most directly.

Natural rubber from Decathlon

The Decathlon Natural/Jute Rubber Yoga Mat is the thinnest of the five, at 4 mm. It carries a 2 year warranty, which is the only warranty stated among the mats in this guide.

Decathlon’s category page for rubber mats also lists a rubber foam mat of 185 x 65 cm and a foldable 1.3 mm anti slip rubber mat of 180 x 62 cm. The natural jute mat’s own page shows no dimensions or weight.

Two cautions apply. The mat is thinner than the thickness that the retailer’s own blog favours, and the blog says natural rubber is to be avoided with a latex allergy.

Foam and PVC options

The Nivia Flow Yoga Mat is 8 mm thick and made of closed cell NBR based rubber foam with a crocodile texture on top. The page describes it as sweat resistant and suited to yoga, Pilates, warm ups and mobility work.

It offers the most cushioning for knees and wrists, which suits someone doing floor work. The thickness also runs against the blog’s note on standing balance. The page lists no dimensions or weight.

The Kobo AC-19 is a PVC mat with a textured non slip surface, listed for yoga, Pilates, stretching and meditation. It was found on a retailer page, KIBI Sports, and not on a Kobo page, and that page listed no dimensions or warranty.

Orders on the retailer page appeared to be paused in November 2026. A buyer interested in PVC would do well to check a current brand page for this model.

Weight and carrying

A buyer who carries a mat up a flight of stairs or to a park would want to know its weight, yet none of the Boldfit, Cult, Decathlon or Nivia pages lists one. The Boldfit listing includes a carrying bag and the Cult listing includes a strap.

Without weights, the length and thickness on the listing are the only guides to bulk. The pages also differ on length, from 182 cm for the Cult to 183 cm for the Boldfit, a gap too small to matter for most floors.

Returns and exchanges

Return terms differ more than the mats do. Boldfit allows returns within a week, with the refund given as store credit only. Cult says no returns are accepted, and offers an exchange within the same week.

Decathlon lists a month for exchanges alongside its warranty. The Nivia page carries only a link to a seven day return policy, and the Kobo listing states nothing.

For a first mat, where the feel underfoot is hard to judge from a listing, the return terms carry real weight.

Care and first use

Sticky PVC mats are only sticky when clean, as per Decathlon’s blog. A new one needs washing before first use, and a microfibre cloth is the cleaning tool the blog names.

For the Boldfit mat, the brand says to wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap and not to soak or machine wash it. The EVA page from the same brand lists strap and alignment lines as present on some variants and absent on others.

The Cult page gives no care instructions, and the Nivia page describes the surface as sweat resistant without saying how to clean it.

Frequently asked questions

What thickness of yoga mat suits a beginner?

A mat of middle thickness is called more practical than a thinner one in Decathlon's blog, which says a mat that is too thin can strain the knees in a crescent lunge. The same blog adds that very thick mats can make balance poses harder.

Is a TPE mat better than a PVC mat?

The Decathlon blog describes PVC as the most common material and hard to recycle, while TPE is called less reactive and polluting. The blog is a retailer's view, not an independent test.

Who needs to avoid a rubber yoga mat?

Anyone allergic to latex, according to the Decathlon blog, which advises staying away from natural rubber mats. A TPE mat described as latex free is the alternative that the brands list.

How is a TPE yoga mat cleaned?

Boldfit advises wiping the mat with a damp cloth and mild soap. Soaking and machine washing are both ruled out on the brand's page.

Why is a new PVC mat washed before the first session?

Per Decathlon's blog, sticky PVC mats are only sticky when clean. Washing a new one and then cleaning it with a microfibre cloth is the care it suggests.
